And Back to Casa Vela We Go

It feels a bit like returning home. Different room, much better with a separate kitchen and a wonderful patio that turns a corner, loads of space. Ashamedly the thing I’m most looking forward to is a ceiling fan over the bed – Mark knew this was the perfect room as soon as he saw that fan! Even better than I remembered, we start to move in…for a month – seems like forever so we are unpacking. This is momentous to us, we’ve been out of suitcases since we left Houston. I find the remote for the fan, turn it on and the world is right. Until the electricity blows. Oh good gawd, Tracey’s gonna get hot, thinks my wonderful husband, who starts closing curtains before dashing out to find the manager, lovely Nadia. She joins us and we go through it six or so times firmly establishing the problem is that bloody ceiling fan. Can this be real? Now Pedro is here with his trusty ladder and we are crossing our fingers that I’ll get my ceiling fan or I just might cry. Oh, and I’ve broken my toe. Good news, Mark had tape in his golf bag, wow.

Our view from one side.

And the other side.

But it is nice to be back in Cascais, leafy and vibrant with birds and people. Oitavos Dunes isn’t far but seemed like miles away. Mark and I both remarked how isolated we felt. We are looking at a condo near there tomorrow but the map shows some restaurants, a bakery and little grocery within a mile, that’s a deal breaker. No more deathly quiet neighbourhoods! Obviously, this place is heaven and we can’t expect that forever but for now, it’s really good.

  1. I pulled up a map of Portugal to get a sense of where y’all are! Love the new room, and can imagine how great it is to unpack the bags and turn on the ceiling fan!! Hope they got it fixed for you. DO let us know. Are you doing any cooking?
    Virtual hugs!!! Lesley

  2. Yes, it is truly beautiful and I’m so glad we ended up here. No to the cooking – has been hot and there is way too much food to buy or sample in restaurants right now. Delicious, not too expensive and perfect for these two lazy travellers. Honestly, bread and butter with a cup of coffee covers it for me.

  3. Food note: as Mark ate the other morning on his own, he investigated Portuguese cheese. They do not have our standard cheeses but versions similar and many are regulated like wine in France. The shelves are full of cheeses here and I’ve yet to find one I don’t like. Sebastian will be in heaven.
